iMech News 9.18.2013

Been a while since the last update so let’s get right to it with preorder updates, build-up pics, and finally some new product announcements!

The Walrus by Christophe Arnold »

walrusannouncement

First up we want to introduce the Walrus and a related 4-figure set designed and 3D sculpted by the talented Christophe Arnold. This 1:35 scale APC and Figure set will be available late 2013/early 2014. Match this up with Michael Herm’s Rook and other modern military kits for some great diorama possibilities! Christophe is still working on the 4th figure, but we wanted to show this off sooner than later. Price/Release Date TBD.

Solid, Liquid, & Gas Container Sets »

Something missing from our line-up is some cool modern accessories to go with kits like the Ian McQue airships, Dustbuster, Walrus, and Rook. We enlisted Nate Clowar, the 3D artist behind the Dustbuster to create three different container sets based on Solids, Liquids, and Gasses. Mix elements from these three for your sci-fi and modern dioramas. Also worth mentioning is this is the first time we’ve done something based on reproducing real-life objects. We feel so weird doing real stuff, but in a good way as these work great for so many of our products! Price TBD. Release Date: October 2013.

The Dragonfly

fichtenfoo-im-dragonfly-00

I recently finished up two of our iMech releases. The first is my 1/35 Dragonfly. As biased as I am having designed it, the kit was a joy to work on. It’s large, but not in volume thanks to the large thin wings. A Step-By-Step can be found on my FichtenFoo blog here.

The Centurion

fichtenfoo-imech-centu-01

I also *finally* finished up one of my two Fabio M. Silva Centurion builds. I was waiting on LEDs and resistors, then got side-tracked with other work and projects. There wasn’t much to do to finish this up… just some soldering of the LEDs and inserting them and the small wires behind the eyes. A Step-By-Step can be found on my FichtenFoo blog here.

Sorry for the lack of news recently. In less than one week however, summer break’s over and school starts back up for my girls which means that I’ll have more time to get things done here! So you know…. woohoo!!! Now onto the news:

Manchu’s Steam Car »

manchusteamcar_lrg

Check out the pics below of the printed parts ready for casting. This 1/35 scale masterpiece comes with a photoetch dash, two seated figures, map, and concept art/instruction booklet.

Adrian Smith’s Frankenstein »

This kit should be shipping next week! It’s been a long time coming and I really apologize for the delay. Frankenstein needed remolding and the caster had to fire his assistant due to not doing quality checking or just ignoring it all-together. The resin should be here by Tuesday and the chain (I opened my order today to start packing and it was the wrong size!) should be here in a couple days as I have it coming overnight. Thanks for your patience!

FichtenFoo’s Dragonfly »

The Dragonfly is selling fast and should be ready for shipping in under 10 days. I just got word that the PE and Casting is complete and they’re bagging/boxing the parts for me now. When it arrives I’ll pack the product boxes and get them out the door as well as paint one myself! My daughter and I have been catching real dragonflies and damselflies at a local wetland/walking trail to pin for a potential science fair project so I have lots of colorful and beautiful examples. If you’ve been following our Facebook page, you’ve seen how cool the instructions have turned out.

Dystopic »

I’ve been waiting on another order of the large orb bases for the latest batch of Dystopic kits. They’re coming with Frankenstein (same caster) so when they do the Dystopic preorders will be shipping as well.

FichtenFoo’s Hornethopter »

The Hornethopter will be coming back after Frankenstein’s done as it’s from the same caster. I’ll start a preorder for it very soon as it’ll probably ship by the end of September.

The Dragonfly!

dragonfly_lrg-jpg

Don’t blink and don’t bother trying to keep up. Doktor Orpheus Odanata’s Dragonfly is the fastest ornithopter in the skies. Designed and sculpted by FichtenFoo (Michael Fichtenmayer), creator of the Hornethopter, Fantastical Fish-Sub, and Long-Nose Fish Sub, the Dragonfly will add a great touch to any steampunk display. This kit boasts an impressive wingspan of 14 inches (35cm) and a length of 9.5 inches (25cm). Like the Hornethopter, the wings are two layers of photoetched brass with a laser-cut plastic wing-film insert.

  • Detailed Instructions

Special thanks to Christophe Desse for the pilot and rear fuselage 3D modeling.

iMech News 7.9.2013

Good news, bad news and ugly news… Thanks to the upcoming San Diego Comicon, everything is delayed for us since our 3D vendor has a lot of big-name rush client work to do for that show. So all of our releases got pushed back as a result and now I need to shift things around a bit to manage it. We also have a bunch of releases in the pipeline that I haven’t announced yet, so since this one will be sooner now, let’s start with it…

FichtenFoo’s Dragonfly [1/35] »

fichtenfoodragonfly-02

The follow-up to the wildly popular Hornethopter (which will be back in stock late summer 2013), the Dragonfly (working title), much like its real-world influence is built for speed. Instead of making the abdomen wider to awkwardly accommodate a pilot, I moved the seating to the rear of the thorax to give it a more streamlined look of an old race car/plane look and feel. The pilot is the same as that used in the Hornethopter and Aviators set in order to reduce production costs (new 3D pilot + 3D print = $$$) Christophe Desse (Red Star/Aviators sculptor) 3D sculpted the thorax based on plans I had sent him, and the rest is hand-sculpted by me (FichtenFoo).

fichtenfoodragonfly-01

Since this was just about ready to go to the caster, I finished up some details and will be sending it to the caster as soon as I finish up the photoetch and instructional design. Look for the Dragonfly to be available by late August 2013. Estimated cost is $99, but that’s an estimate until the casting and photoetch costs come back. The wings will be about 2X the size of the Hornet’s wings area-wise with each wing being a little over 6 inches giving this craft a wingspan of about 14″/35cm. The Dragonfly will also have 15mm half-sphere glass eye lenses, rigging, and laser-cut wing plastic.

Preorder Delays »

A few weeks ago I wrote: “Currently on the site we have the Remora and Frankenstein up for preorder. Since the caster for these was also sidetracked by Wonderfest USA and playing catch-up, they’re slightly behind. Thanks for your patience and support with these!” And things haven’t gotten better… in fact they’ve gotten more behind. The issue is that both of these are using the same caster and both needed remolded. He’s just one guy and has had some health issues lately. I should have at least the Remoras on July 27, 2013 he says and Frankenstein soon after. I’m not exactly thrilled about delaying these any more than you are, but it unfortunately cannot be helped. Rest assured, they are coming.

Other preorder items, such as the upcoming Steam Car and Dragonfly will be handled by a faster casting firm so will not suffer the same delays.

Again, I’m terribly sorry for these delays. It’s not cool and not something I ever want to happen and have been striving to overcome since I started this company. Please be patient and they’ll be on their way as soon as possible.

iMech News 6.21.2013

Far past time for another edition of iMech News! It’s been a crazy few months. April/May was the lead-up to Wonderfest USA so lots of prepping to do. Then when I returned I have several large commission paint-jobs for a toy company. Now that those are out of the way however I’m trying to get back on track.

Existing Preorder Statuses »

Currently on the site we have the Remora and Frankenstein up for preorder. Since the caster for these was also sidetracked by Wonderfest USA and playing catch-up, they’re slightly behind. Thanks for your patience and support with these!

remoracover

Remora: Estimated shipping date is between 7.6.2013-7.13-2013. The Remora needed all new molds so it’s taking a little longer than expected, however it’s better to wait for good casts than to rush it with old molds and be disappointed.

fmain

Frankenstein: Again, Frankenstein needs all new molds so we’re looking at end of July as an estimated shipping date.

Dystopic: Kits are on their way. Should be shipping out on 2 weeks.

New Product/Upcoming Preorders »

We’ve had to adjust our release schedule because of a show we’re not even attending! The San Diego Comicon is a beast of a show and eats up resources world-wide. As such, our 3D printing vendor is swamped with rush projects for SDCC related clients. This has pushed back a few ouf our releases such as…:

steamcarannouncement

Manchu’s Steam Car (1/35): It is my understanding that this is printing this week, so once it happens, gets cleaned-up and casting ready, I should have a set price and preorder date. I can’t even guess at a price until I get the printing and casting quotes as those are the variable and largest expenses. More Info »

Dr. Torque (1/35): He is in the same boat as the Steam car. The final price should be around $18, same as Sasha due to the additional equipment and amount of small parts. More Info »

chronosheet

The Chrononaut: The files are at the 3D printer and he’ll start production soon. More pics and info next week! More Info »

im-estafette-i

L’Estafette: Coming up right after the Chrononaut! Still need to finalize a few things such as the wheels then we’re good to go. More Info »

Upcoming Restocks »

rook_lrg

The Rook: This amazingly detailed Rook walking tank will be available for preorder today! Click here to preorder your copy. Estimated shipping date: 7.12.2013.

fichtenfoo-hornet-00

The Hornethopter: Right after Frankenstein, the Hornethopter will be back for a 5th edition! I have everything but the resin on-hand so when it’s closer to the delivery date I’ll start a preorder for these.

fichtenfoo-fishsub-wp

FichtenFoo’s Fantastical Fish-Shaped Submersible: When I designed this Fish-Shaped Sub, I never thought I’d do 2 runs let alone this upcoming 7th edition of this steampunk inspired favorite! Expect the Fish to make a return sometime in August. Meanwhile we have the Long-Nose Fish-Shaped Submersible in-stock and ready to go!

3D Modeler Needed for Vehicle Concept

Usually I wouldn’t do this, but I have an idea that, with the help of a fantastic concept artist, is being fleshed out and in need of a 3D modeler to complete for an early 2014 release. I can’t say what the idea is just yet, but we’re looking for someone who specializes in mechanical, hard-surfaces modeling to collaborate with us on this project/product line.

I’m looking for someone who can do that over-detailed modern sci-fi look like one might see on movies such as Transformers, Battleship, Pacific Rim, coupled with smoother elements like those from Tron Uprising, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc…for a vehicle design.

Compensation is based on profit sharing. It’s not a lot (depending on the release), but most of us just do this on the side of our day jobs because we love modeling and seeing cool new ideas come to life. It’s like a labor of love with a cash bonus. :-)

Contact me (Michael Fichtenmayer aka FichtenFoo) here with a link to your online portfolio and any other details I should know. Thanks!

Been a while due to prepping for Wonderfest USA, which was this past weekend, but here’s some news!

Wonderfest Update

p5180012

First up, my first ever Wonderfest trip was awesome! The dealer table was a huge success, but best was meeting a lot of our customers and getting to know all of you. I was behind the Industria Mechanika table for most of the show, however I did manage to get a midnight screening of the model contest room and Sunday morning I made my way quickly around the dealer room to see all the goodies. Even picked up a few things for myself if I ever have time to build them. Thanks to all of you who stopped by from all over the world to say hello and introduce yourselves. It was also cool meeting the guys from Kaibutsuya who traveled from Japan as they’re one of our regular dealers. Overall, it’s mostly a blur, so send me an email and a facebook friend request if we chatted! Also special thanks to Jason Eaton, Jimi Glancy, Mike Salzo, and Quincy Cutshaw for helping me out with the booth!

The Centurion

centurion1

The Centurion, a 1/4 scale bust by Fabio M. Silva, the teased item that was supposed to be available at Wonderfest is still in production due to a delay, but I can show it off finally so that you can get on the notification list. This awesome 1/4 scale armored alien bust was designed by Fabio M. Silva. It will feature clear eye inserts to make potential lighting easier if that’s your thing. Look for it to be available in the next month. Click here to get on the notification list.

New Products Pushed-Pack/Delays

We’ve been really pumping out the releases one after the other and it’s gotten a little crazy to say the least. So for a number of reasons, a few items have been delayed which will be pushing our release schedule back a bit. I apologize for this, but it’s best if we want to produce the best products we can AND stay in business in the long run. Thanks for understanding. The Centurion and the Steam Car will be available for preorder in the next few weeks as well as the 2nd Edition of Frankenstein, another run of the Hornethopter, and more!

Wonderfest USA This Weekend!

In a few hours I’ll be leaving for Wonderfest USA. Hope to meet some of you there during the 3 day event in Louisville, KY, USA. While I’m away I won’t have time to respond to emails and won’t be here to pack and ship so any orders that are not preorders will go out on Tuesday the 21st.

Look for me (Michael Fichtenmayer aka FichtenFoo) at the Industria Mechanika dealer table (Table 7). Jason “Roboterkampf” Eaton will be helping me out Saturday morning for an hour before his demo at 10am so be sure to check out his gig!

When I return (and during the event) you can get a sneak peak at our next release (a 1/4 scale bust) which was supposed to be ready for the show, but due to quality assurance it wasn’t. Better done right than done fast though!

Thanks!
