Been a while since the last update so let’s get right to it with preorder updates, build-up pics, and finally some new product announcements!
The Walrus by Christophe Arnold »
First up we want to introduce the Walrus and a related 4-figure set designed and 3D sculpted by the talented Christophe Arnold. This 1:35 scale APC and Figure set will be available late 2013/early 2014. Match this up with Michael Herm’s Rook and other modern military kits for some great diorama possibilities! Christophe is still working on the 4th figure, but we wanted to show this off sooner than later. Price/Release Date TBD.
Something missing from our line-up is some cool modern accessories to go with kits like the Ian McQue airships, Dustbuster, Walrus, and Rook. We enlisted Nate Clowar, the 3D artist behind the Dustbuster to create three different container sets based on Solids, Liquids, and Gasses. Mix elements from these three for your sci-fi and modern dioramas. Also worth mentioning is this is the first time we’ve done something based on reproducing real-life objects. We feel so weird doing real stuff, but in a good way as these work great for so many of our products! Price TBD. Release Date: October 2013.
I recently finished up two of our iMech releases. The first is my 1/35 Dragonfly. As biased as I am having designed it, the kit was a joy to work on. It’s large, but not in volume thanks to the large thin wings. A Step-By-Step can be found on my FichtenFoo blog here.
I also *finally* finished up one of my two Fabio M. Silva Centurion builds. I was waiting on LEDs and resistors, then got side-tracked with other work and projects. There wasn’t much to do to finish this up… just some soldering of the LEDs and inserting them and the small wires behind the eyes. A Step-By-Step can be found on my FichtenFoo blog here.
Don’t blink and don’t bother trying to keep up. Doktor Orpheus Odanata’s Dragonfly is the fastest ornithopter in the skies. Designed and sculpted by FichtenFoo (Michael Fichtenmayer), creator of the Hornethopter, Fantastical Fish-Sub, and Long-Nose Fish Sub, the Dragonfly will add a great touch to any steampunk display. This kit boasts an impressive wingspan of 14 inches (35cm) and a length of 9.5 inches (25cm). Like the Hornethopter, the wings are two layers of photoetched brass with a laser-cut plastic wing-film insert.
Good news, bad news and ugly news… Thanks to the upcoming San Diego Comicon, everything is delayed for us since our 3D vendor has a lot of big-name rush client work to do for that show. So all of our releases got pushed back as a result and now I need to shift things around a bit to manage it. We also have a bunch of releases in the pipeline that I haven’t announced yet, so since this one will be sooner now, let’s start with it…
FichtenFoo’s Dragonfly [1/35] »
The follow-up to the wildly popular Hornethopter (which will be back in stock late summer 2013), the Dragonfly (working title), much like its real-world influence is built for speed. Instead of making the abdomen wider to awkwardly accommodate a pilot, I moved the seating to the rear of the thorax to give it a more streamlined look of an old race car/plane look and feel. The pilot is the same as that used in the Hornethopter and Aviators set in order to reduce production costs (new 3D pilot + 3D print = $$$) Christophe Desse (Red Star/Aviators sculptor) 3D sculpted the thorax based on plans I had sent him, and the rest is hand-sculpted by me (FichtenFoo).
Since this was just about ready to go to the caster, I finished up some details and will be sending it to the caster as soon as I finish up the photoetch and instructional design. Look for the Dragonfly to be available by late August 2013. Estimated cost is $99, but that’s an estimate until the casting and photoetch costs come back. The wings will be about 2X the size of the Hornet’s wings area-wise with each wing being a little over 6 inches giving this craft a wingspan of about 14″/35cm. The Dragonfly will also have 15mm half-sphere glass eye lenses, rigging, and laser-cut wing plastic.
Preorder Delays »
A few weeks ago I wrote: “Currently on the site we have the Remora and Frankenstein up for preorder. Since the caster for these was also sidetracked by Wonderfest USA and playing catch-up, they’re slightly behind. Thanks for your patience and support with these!” And things haven’t gotten better… in fact they’ve gotten more behind. The issue is that both of these are using the same caster and both needed remolded. He’s just one guy and has had some health issues lately. I should have at least the Remoras on July 27, 2013 he says and Frankenstein soon after. I’m not exactly thrilled about delaying these any more than you are, but it unfortunately cannot be helped. Rest assured, they are coming.
Other preorder items, such as the upcoming Steam Car and Dragonfly will be handled by a faster casting firm so will not suffer the same delays.
Again, I’m terribly sorry for these delays. It’s not cool and not something I ever want to happen and have been striving to overcome since I started this company. Please be patient and they’ll be on their way as soon as possible.
Ian McQue’s Waldo, sculpted by Michael Fichtenmayer (aka FichtenFoo) is now available for preorders! This kit sports a fantastic laser-cut wood deck and plastic windows, full photoetch wheelhouse (2 large sheets of etch for this and other details), waterslide decals, pilot figure, and hollow hull with full engine visible from the deck grating and from the bottom of the hull’s thruster opening. Pics, art, instructions, etc on the shop page here.
Time again for a little news! Today we finally show off the Ian McQue Waldo as well as some housekeeping with release dates, etc.
Calum Watt’s Freaky Gothic »
First-up is Freaky Gothic by Calum Watt and David Richardson. We’ve of course shown this before, so this is just a reminder that the tentative preorder start date is next Friday, 4.5.2013. I say tentative because I don’t have a casting quote yet as the master is in port-print clean-up and the caster hasn’t seen it yet. As always, as soon as I know, you’ll know! Until then, enjoy the pic and tell your friends! Click here to get a notification when the preorder starts.
Ian McQue’s Waldo »
I finished the master and etch design a few weeks ago and sent this to the caster for production. The tentative preorder start date is 5.1.2013 with the price being somewhere around $120 if all goes well with the casting quote. The Waldo has many resin parts, as well as 2 LARGE photoetch frets to make up the wheelhouse as well as other details, laser-cut windows that will be sandwiched between PE frames as you can see in the etch design image below, and a laser-cut and etched wooden deck. It’ll also come with string and wire to complete it. There’s a lot of detail and multimedia packed into this kit so it’ll be a lot of fun to construct and weather. The hollow 2-part hull has a full engine design inside of it that you can see through the grates on the deck or from the thruster hole below. The Waldo also comes with a 3D designed pilot by Ian McQue and Rishi Nandlaskar who sculpted the Deckhands set. More info on the actual price when info comes in. Hi. How are you? Good? Awesome. Now that that’s over, let’s get onto the news! This time: SASHA’S BACK! Yup! Also finished pics of FichtenFoo’s Sky Marks and Luca Z’s Kastor build-ups as well as a Rook preorder update.
Sasha The Welding Girl in 1/35 and 1/32! »
Sasha the Welding Girl is back in 1/35 and 1/32 scale looking better than ever thanks to a new caster for the project. Get her while she lasts!
The Rook and Pawn Brigade masters have been printed and are at the caster. As soon as they send me the quote I can get the final price together and start preorders. I should be able to start preorders this Friday, Feb 15th at noon EST if all goes well. If not, then Tuesday, Feb 19th at noon EST will be our make-up date.
Welcome to another edition of iMech news! This time we talk about the recent iHobby show in Cleveland, OH which I attended last weekend, Ian McQue Sky Mark Preorders, Derek Stenning’s Dystopic Preorders, Orb Ship shipping and build-info, and upcoming restocks.
Ian McQue’s Sky Mark Preorder Date, Price »
The Ian McQue Sky Mark buoy will be available for preorder on 10.31.2012 aka Halloween! I received my tests of both the photoetch and the resin so expect unpainted build-up pics next week some time. Watch the Facebook page for the usual first-look. This kit comes with two large frets of photoetch for construction, brass rod, and blinking red LEDs for those wanting to light it.
Sky Mark Price:
This little guy is best in pairs IMO so we’ll offering the kit’s first edition of 100 kits at $60 each or two for $100 USD + Shipping. We suspect these will go fast due to the amount of notification requests, amount of Remora’s sold, and the low price. They should be shipping some time in November.
We’re getting close on Dystopic! I should have the first batch of resin in a week to two. After that I can begin the instruction sheet and boxing. I’m having two casters work on this to keep the costs as low as I can manage. We’re estimating that Dystopic will cost $210 USD + shipping. What you get though is well worth it! A large 1/6 scale figure kit overflowing with fine detail and texture, wire, decals, laser-cut clear flower, and possibly PE as well. We’ll start the preorder event on 11.5.2012 as by then we should have a better idea of the final costs.
I received the initial samples of the Orb Ship resin this weekend as well as the production photoetch frets. It’s going together really well and I’ve already got the lighting done and the laser-cut windows in place with their PE frames. Check out the video and images of my pre-release build below.
Originally we had planned for the canopy to be a vacuformed piece. Well, that didn’t work out so well so we’ve decided to go with a resin canopy. Blappy is doing an amazing job on it so I thought I’d share the results.Production is ongoing but we hope to be shipping these in about 3 weeks from today.
I was invited by one of my distributors, Tom Grossman of Tag Team Hobbies, to come to the iHobby Expo in Cleveland, OH and display, sell some of our wares. The show was a lot of fun and the Tag Team guys couldn’t have been nicer. I got a chance to meet some of you, shocked a few that didn’t realize that I am also FichtenFoo, and got some great ideas from the other exhibitors for future releases. Here’s a few pics.
